After living for nearly a hundred years on this planet, I now understand that the most important place on Earth is not on land, but at sea."

~ David Attenborough

This project is driven by a shared care for our oceans, our wildlife, and the future of our coastal ecosystems.

Through patience, curiosity and a commitment to understanding nature, we are working to explore how kelp can return to the waters around Hastings.

To do this, we rely on a combination of science, fieldwork and community effort — from ecological surveys and underwater monitoring to laboratory work, diving, and public engagement.

All of this comes with real costs.

If you would like to support the project, you can donate using the link below, or get in touch to explore ways to work together and contribute to the recovery of our marine environment.

Our Network & Support

The Hastings Kelp Project is supported by a growing network of scientists, organisations, community partners and environmental initiatives across the UK and internationally.

We are actively collaborating, sharing knowledge and aligning with leading research and restoration efforts to ensure our work contributes to the wider understanding and recovery of kelp ecosystems.

As the project develops, we are also engaging with funding partners and programmes to support our long-term goals.

Advancing kelp recovery through rigorous, science-led research integrating controlled laboratory experimentation, in situ observation, and environmental monitoring. The project generates high-quality data on growth dynamics, resilience, and ecosystem interactions, informing evidence-based pathways for responsible, regulated field trials and long-term marine ecosystem recovery within changing coastal environments.
